What to Expect When Visiting an Emergency Dentist

Whether you’re dealing with a knocked-out tooth, a searing toothache, or a lost dental crown, dental emergencies are stressful. Not only are they alarming and potentially painful, but not knowing how to handle them can compound the anxiety surrounding them as well. Fortunately, you can reduce distress by conquering your fear of the unknown and learning what to do in a dental emergency! Here’s what you can expect when you call your Coatesville emergency dentist.

Call for a Same-Day Appointment

The first thing you should do in a dental emergency is call your dentist. If your situation requires immediate attention, such as a knocked-out tooth, they’ll schedule you for a same-day emergency appointment. If your emergency needs to be treated right away but does not require same-day care, they’ll book you for the next available appointment.

Once your appointment is scheduled, an experienced team member will walk you through basic first-aid for how to best handle your emergency until you can reach their office.

Get a Quick but Thorough Emergency Exam

When you arrive for your appointment, your dentist will see you right away for an exam. They’ll evaluate your mouth and take X-rays as necessary. If necessary, they’ll take steps to get you out of any serious pain you may be experiencing. Once they’ve determined the source and extent of your emergency, they’ll be able to recommend which treatment or treatments they recommend moving forward with.

From there, they will work with you to create a custom treatment plan. You’ll know the estimated length and cost of the services beforehand, as well as your payment and financing options.

Receive the Fast, Professional Dental Care You Need

As soon as you’ve agreed to a treatment plan, your emergency dentist and their team will get to work right away. In most all cases, your situation will be addressed right away with services like a filling, dental crown, or tooth extraction. In some cases, you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment, such as if you have a root canal or gum disease therapy. If you’re feeling particularly anxious or stressed, or if you’re in a lot of pain, your dentist may recommend calming dental sedation. Options like nitrous oxide sedation are ideal for helping you relax and feel as comfortable as possible while your dental team gets your oral health back on track.

Hopefully, you’ll never experience a dental emergency. But if you do, you can feel a bit less stressed knowing what to expect when you call your emergency dentist!
