What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a type of prosthesis that can literally “bridge” any gaps left by one or more missing teeth. To create the bridge, artificial teeth known as pontics are suspended between two crowns. The pontics will serve as the actual replacement teeth; meanwhile, the crowns will keep the entire prosthesis anchored in place by being attached to either your natural teeth or dental implants.

Types of Dental Bridges

A traditional dental bridge is supported by natural teeth while an implant bridge is attached to a pair of dental implants. Which kind of bridge is right for your smile? Our team can help you figure that out by taking a closer look at your mouth and considering your unique oral health needs. Here are the basics of what you need to know about the different kinds of bridges.

Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional dental bridge can be used to replace at least one missing tooth. Before you can qualify for a traditional dental bridge, we’ll have to evaluate the teeth on either side of the gap being filled. We will only move forward with the process once we have confirmed that the teeth are strong and healthy enough for the job.

Implant Bridge

When three or more teeth in a row are missing, it’s often possible to fill in the empty space with a dental bridge supported by dental implants. Bear in mind, though, that while dental implants do have many advantages over traditional forms of tooth replacement, they will need time to fuse with the jawbone before they can support a dental bridge; this process typically takes several months.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

Some of the advantages of replacing your missing teeth with a dental bridge include:

  • Keeping your remaining teeth properly aligned by filling in the empty space in your mouth, thus preventing dental drift.
  • Having a full set of teeth again for speaking and chewing your food.
  • Being able to brush your prosthesis as if it were your natural teeth.
  • Having a tooth replacement that can potentially last for many years with the right kind of maintenance.
